Every autumn velvet returns to the fashion world – familiar, yet different. How to wear it this autumn and winter without overdoing its rather sumptuous impact?

This season all designers are fascinated with velvet – they use it not only for dresses, but also coats, jackets and even handbags and shoes. And on top of that, they are using quite unusual colours for autumn and winter: dark blue, purple and black. Draped dresses in pale pink as well as golden velvet jumpsuits are also present.

Maybe the most common way to use velvet for a garment. A variety of different styles is to be seen on the catwalk – from classic ankle-length dresses without excessive details (Fendi) to the ones intricately adorned with golden embroidery (Prada) and lace (Antonio Berardi). The situation with underwear is the same – Valentino and Brock Collection remembered to create matching sets.

For those of you who have never worn a jumpsuit, the most appropriate is the classic style in black with as little as possible or no decoration at all – those offered by Topshop Unique and Ralph Laurent. If your heart is longing for some more imagination, take a look at the designs by the British brand Holly Fulton – the ones with silver prints, for example.

Focus on the styles by Vetements. The elegant suit in purple which they displayed on their autumn show was combined with a checked men’s shirt. A more rocking take on this you will find with Haider Ackermann – a long red jacket from worn velvet in combination with tight red velvet trousers. David Bowie would definitely approve of it.

Sporty Chic

Designers are trying to save velvet from its reputation of being a fabric only suitable for solemn occasions and formal events. Some examples include a set of a sports jacket and an ankle-length skirt by Lacoste and with Tommy Hilfiger and Dion Lee – short bomber velvet jackets. Roksanda sewed up braids to a velvet sports suit, which was quite business-looking at first glance.

Accessories from velvet are not particularly common. And namely – handbags and shoes made of velvet add splendour even to the simplest personal style. This autumn, direct your attention to all accessories with exuberant decorations – the quartz embroidered clutch by Jimmy Choo, for example.
