At the age of 23 Julia Roberts plays the leading role in Pretty Woman. The film becomes emblematic while her acting shoots her to the orbit of Hollywood superstars, where she has belonged up to the present day. This character seems to never let her go because this year the actress is number one for the record-breaking fifth time in the chart World’s Most Beautiful by People Magazine. But it is not just her refined outer appearance that is valued highly. Just remember George Clooney’s words when he is challenged to describe the perfect woman: “A woman who has the laughter of Nicole Kidman, the personality of Julia Roberts, the ‘quintessence of beauty’ of Michelle Pfeiffer and the ambition of Jennifer Lopez.” Touching, but totally valid.
Describing her highest achievements, we cannot pass by the fact that Julia is also the first actress to receive a payment amounting to $20 million – this is the sum that she gets for her acting in the film Erin Brokovich. The role of the woman who managed to obtain the highest compensation claim in the history of American jurisdiction is based on entirely true events. And the real-life Erin is also ecstatic with the talent of the charming star: “The movie is incredible and Julia Roberts made a great role. I never imagined that somebody would be interested in my fate and even film it. I don’t remember anymore how many times I have seen the movie, but whenever I play it, the excitement and the memories come flooding back.”
The Hollywood smile, as they also call Julia, grows up in a family of two actors, but in spite of this fact she dreams of becoming a vet in order to treat animals. At high school she learns to play the clarinet. But from the moment she leaves for New York, fate starts sending her signs about what kind of future is awaiting her. She embarks on a modelling career with small roles, which, however, quickly start becoming more and more important.
A curious fact about her breakthrough with Pretty Woman is that initially the role is given to Meg Ryan, who refuses to play it, nevertheless. By a strange concurrence of circumstances, on the other hand, Julia refuses the leading role in Sleepless in Seatle three years later and Meg accepts it. What is even stranger is that the Pretty Woman is not even in the advertising campaign for the film but rather, her face is photoshopped over the body of a model.
Today Julia marks her 50th anniversary and we want to celebrate it by remembering some of the star’s most influential quotes:
“I believe the way you feel about your life will eventually show up on your face.”
“I’m just an ordinary person who has an extraordinary job.”
“If you love someone, you say it, right then, out loud. Otherwise, the moment just passes you by.”
“You know it’s love when all you want is that person to be happy, even if you’re not part of their happiness.”
“I just want to make a point that it’s not just great teachers that sometimes shape your life. Sometimes it’s the absence of great teachers that shapes your life and being ignored can be just as good for a person as being lauded.”
“True love doesn’t come to you, it has to be inside you.”
“I wouldn’t do nudity in films. For me, personally… to act with my clothes on is a performance; to act with my clothes off is a documentary.”
“It’s an excellent life. I’m rich. I’m happy. I have a great job. I travel hither and yon to fabulous places. I’m surrounded by wonderful, interesting people. I live a privileged life – hugely privileged… It would be absurd to pretend that it’s anything different.”
