Each great creator needs some kind of inspiration in order to work on their ingenious creations. Quite understandably, to a multi-faceted artist like Karl Lagerfeld muses are of extreme importance. His work for Chanel, Fendi and his eponymous brand, together with his unforgettable personality, have earned him a reputation of an incomparably creative beast in the contemporary world of fashion design. The reason for his never-ending inspiration throughout the years are his muses – actresses and models who inspire a huge part of his work for Chanel.

Karl loves inspirers with a young spirit. In the 90s he adores Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Diane Kruger and other professional beauties, who are then between 20 and 30 years old. Nowadays, his muses are even younger, having in mind the growing popularity of teen celebrities.

From Vanessa Paradis and Claudia Schiffer to Kendall Jenner and Willow Smith – here are the ladies, inspiring the Keiser…



Willow Smith

At the beginning of December Lagerfeld officially announced singer and actress Willow Smith as his latest muse. Last March the 15-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith joined the big family of Chanel as an ambassador for the brand and Karl Lagerfeld chose namely her for the last fall/winter collection of sunglasses by Chanel. “Wrapped in jewellery from the fall/winter ready-to-wear collection, she breathes new energy into Chanel’s sunglasses line”, the official statement of the fashion house said. “Her youth and energy fascinated Karl Lagerfeld, who invited her to join the big family of muses in Chanel.”



Kendall Jenner

When you are born in the Kardashian—Jenner TV clan and you grow up in front of the camera, documenting every move of your family, your transformation into a model happens quite naturally. The brunette quickly became a favourite in the fashion world while her appearance caught Lagerfeld’s attention and he made her the face of his own fashion brand Karl Lagerfeld. Not only does Kendall walk for Chanel, but she also closed the Métiers d’Art Collection show hand in hand with her friend Cara Delevingne.



Cara Delevingne

For Cara the brand Chanel has been passed on like inheritance in her family. Her oldest sister Poppy is an ambassador for the brand, and so it was only a matter of time before Cara’s extraordinary personality attracted Mr Lagerfeld’s attention. The blonde has participated in a series of advertising campaigns for Chanel and she regularly stars in their fashion shows. For the 2014 spring/summer show Lagerfeld dressed her in a wedding gown and everyone was quick to declare her Chanel’s most beautiful bride of all times.



Lily-Rose Depp

Barely 16 years old, the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis – Lily-Rose Depp was selected to advertise Chanel’s sunglasses collection for fall/winter 2015/16. The charming young lady was personally chosen by Lagerfeld, who didn’t hide his admiration for her: “Lily-Rose is stunning. She is a young girl from the new generation and she has all the qualities of a star.”



Kristen Stewart

She was chosen by the Keiser for the character of young Coco Chanel in his short film Once and Forever, dedicated to the legendary founder of the fashion house. What does Lagerfeld like about Kristen? “I love everything about her”, he admits. “I like the way she looks, I like the firmness in her behaviour, everything. She is a really good actress. I like strong women who can shout, who could be mean. In men – I hate this; in women – I adore it.”



Keira Knightley

The heavenly feminine style of the British actress turned her into the perfect image for Chanel. Even though she is most popular about her acting in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Pride and Prejudice and Coming Home, Keira could often be spotted in the front row during the brand’s fashion shows.

She became the face of Chanel’s fragrance Coco Mademoiselle in 2006 and she played the character of Coco Chanel in Lagerfeld’s short film Once Upon a Time. For her wedding Keira chose a short wedding gown and ballerina pumps by Chanel, easily abandoning all traditional wedding outfits.



Blake Lively

She presented Mademoiselle – the brand’s luxury line of handbags. The photo shoot for the advertising campaign was in the historical house of Coco Chanel in Paris, under Lagerfeld’s close scrutiny. “It would be an understatement to say that this is a dream come true to me. I feel like the happiest girl in the world”, shared Blake then. “How, in your opinion, did Cinderella feel when the shoe fitted? This is exactly how I am feeling right now.” Chanel’s creative director didn’t hide his fascination with her: “Blake is the embodiment of the American dream.”
