Sometimes the good mood comes by chance. At other times – not. Can we react instantly to each SOS which our minds send after the sudden decrease of the hormones of happiness? Research shows that there are easy ways to stimulate the good mood and handle stress. Like these five, for example…

1. Stop taking it so deep

Pondering over particular thoughts – no matter whether it is about things from the past or anxieties about the future – only makes things worse and prolongs the period of depression, and it can only make the bad mood a permanent state. Bid a farewell to thinking over and over again by doing something constructive: go out jogging, have a manicure, play with your dog – and devote yourself entirely to what you are doing.

2. Do something small for somebody

Everything we do in order to maintain our social relationships is a great way to achieve happiness. “If you want to be happy, practise sympathy”, teaches the Dalai Lama, and research shows that even the smallest gestures (like going shopping for an elderly person) can put you in a good mood.

3. Take care of your health

Rhythmic, repetitive exercise without competing and which includes diaphragmatic breathing (from the stomach) provides you with the best mental bonuses. Yoga has a higher value, because it increases the levels of neurotransmitters, which are associated with happiness and tranquillity, and it reduces the levels of cortisol – the stress hormone.

4. Buy flowers and listen to your favourite music

Research shows that the presence of flowers reduces anxiety and depression, it introduces more cheerfulness at home and make us more enthusiastic at work. Music, on the other hand, affects positively the centre of pleasure in the brain.

5. Be optimistic

Scientists, studying positive psychology, believe that with a little self-delusion we can achieve great effects: we can become happier, healthier and more successful. Research shows that that optimism can reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, boost the immune system and even prolong our lives.
